The prerequisites for this course are a year of physics and a year of calculus. Students will be expected to be able to do basic derivatives and integrals.
Text: James B. Hartle, Gravity: An Introduction to Einstein's General Relativity
Grading will be based on the following:
Homework (due one week after the chapter is completed): 50%
Takehome midterm: 20%
Takehome final: 20%
Term paper (5-7 pages doublespaced) on a specific observation/experiment which
is based on GTR: 10%
We will cover most if not all chapters in the textbook approximately in order, although class notes will not generally be taken directly from the text. Therefore class attendance is very important.
