Materials Physics

Solid State Ionics:

Solid State Ionics involve the study of fast transport of ionic and/or atomic species through solids. There are two main groups of ionic conductors - Solid electrolytes and mixed conductors. Solid electrolytes allow only ionic motion with negligible electronic motion, and mixed conductors allow ionic as well as electronic motion. Ionic conductors have a wide range of technical applications which include high specific energy storage systems for vehicular propulsion, electrochromic windows, sensors etc. Ionic conductors also make very interesting Physics and Chemistry.

Conducting Polymers/Polymer blends:

Polymers, popularly known as plastics, are generally insulators but recent research have led to a number of polymers that conduct electricity. Polymers are lightweight, easy to process, can easily be cast into thin films and also makes interesting science. Applications of conducting polymers include (i) antistatic uses in coatings, films, and paints, (ii) electromagnetic shielding - conductive housings, (iii) specific application conductors such as conductive adhesives, conductive inks, electrodes and resistive heaters etc.
